Your First Braiding Appointment: What to Expect and How to Prepare
How to prepare for a braiding appointment in Annandale VA, how long each style really takes, and exactly what to bring with you.
If you have never sat for a full braiding appointment, the length of it can be a surprise. Here is exactly what to expect, so you can plan your day properly.
Before you come: wash and dry
Come with your hair washed, completely dried and detangled. Not damp. Not “washed yesterday and slept on”.
Nothing else on the list matters as much as this. Braiding damp hair traps moisture at the root, which is how a style ends up smelling by week two. And detangling in the chair eats an hour we could have spent braiding.
If you use a leave-in, apply it lightly. Skip heavy butters and gels entirely, because they make sections slip.
How long it actually takes
Be honest with yourself about the day. These are our realistic ranges:
- Men’s cornrows, two cornrows, wig prep: 1 to 2 hours
- Crochet installs: 2 to 4 hours
- Sew-ins and partial sew-ins: 2 to 4 hours
- Kids braids: 1 to 4 hours depending on style
- Passion, Senegalese and kinky twists: 4 to 6 hours
- Box braids and knotless braids: 4 to 7 hours
- Boho and French curl braids: 5 to 8 hours
- Sister locks installs: a full day, sometimes two
Smaller braids and longer lengths sit at the top of every range. If we quote you six hours, plan for six hours.
What to bring
- A phone charger. Not optional.
- Food and a drink. We would rather you eat than sit hungry through hour five.
- Headphones and something to watch.
- A reference photo, if you have one. It’s genuinely the fastest way to communicate what you want.
- A satin scarf or bonnet for the journey home.
When you arrive
We look at your hair first, checking density, texture and the state of your edges and scalp, then we confirm the style, the size, the length and the price before we start. If we think the style you have chosen won’t sit well on your hair, we’ll say so then, not halfway through.
If anything feels too tight at any point, tell us while you’re in the chair. Adjusting a section takes a minute. Living with it for eight weeks doesn’t.
Paying
Cash and card are both fine. The price is the one on our price list, and we don’t change it on the day.
